Ginnie MacPherson Project 1

Here is my first project. The process I took was to first sketch out the composition of what I wanted to create, then think about the color palette. I went with a few from the Kuler extention.
Most of the robot is drawn using the pen tool and making adjustments using besiƩr curves with the pen tool, transforming, and the direct selection tool. The smoke is on a layer behind the robot. I used merge drawing on some of the clouds. The merge tool is a tough one - it's not fun having them overlap and take chunks out of each other. Hopefully down the road it will make sense why that is useful. For the smoke coming from the robot's head, I drew several primitive circles, then selected them all and modify>join if remembering right.
The gradients were fun to work with in getting the shiny metal effect with reflective orange color. The alpha percentage is useful - making parts of the gradient transparent. I used the direct selection tool to scale, rotate and change the size of a gradient within the shapes.I didn't use the pencil tool very much, but put a few squiggly reflection lines on the robot's arms to further the chrome/metal idea. The alpha percentage on those is scaled back also.Modified text didn't figure in this very much either in the end. I had "red alert" large and repeated around at a few different sizes, but decided just the text on the robot body by the buttons was best.
